Victory Gives The Redcliffe PCYC Dolphins Soccer Club Their First Ever Senior Premiership In The 2010 Men's Metro 2 Competition
On Saturday a crowd of over 200 spectators came along hoping to witness an historic occasion at Talobilla Park and left elated by the events that unfolded.
Although Redcliffe PCYC were 4 points ahead 2nd placed West End Partisans had 2 catch up games to make up and in reality a loss to them would have left
Redcliffe PCYC with virtually no hope of securing the club's much desired first senior premiership although mathematically it was still possibility.
Redcliffe PCYC started very nervously and struggled to produce their normal free flowing football. West End had a clear majority of early
possession but created no real clear cut chances.
From about the 20th minute onwards Redcliffe PCYC began to settle and started to give the West End defence problems. Their goalkeeper was made to work
harder and had to produce 2 first class saves to keep Redcliffe PCYC at bay.
In the 38th minute Nick Watkins sent Liam Borchard through down the right hand side with a fine pass. Liam dribbled inside his defender on the
back line and played a pinpoint pass to the penalty spot for the onrushing Josh Tung to neatly slot the ball into
the top left hand corner and give Redcliffe PCYC a 1 nil lead.
With Redcliffe PCYC beginning to get on top West End went to the half time break wishing that they had a lot more to show for their first half performance.
Although West End probably had more possession it was Redcliffe PCYC that always looked the more likely to score.
After a tactical change at halftime Redcliffe PCYC started the 2nd half as if on fire and striker Alan Garland's 3 attempts on goal in rapid
succession were bravely saved by the West End Keeper causing some to think that this may not be Redcliffe PCYC's day.
The goalkeeper then somehow kept West End in the game by thwarting good opportunities on goal by Thomas Simmonds, Nathan Offer & Liam Borchard.
Redcliffe PCYC though now clearly had the ascendency with the West End goal continually under attack.
It was only a matter of time before in the 71st minute Liam Borchard latched onto another through ball, went round the keeper and slotted
it into the far corner from an acute angle.
A silly foul by West End in the 73rd minute gave Redcliffe PCYC a free kick which enabled Captain Brendan Davis to produce a perfect ball to allow
Jak Glynn to smash a header into the roof of the opposition net.
With West End now clearly demoralised, Josh Tung dabbed a side foot volley over the head of the advancing goalkeeper and into the net to finish the
game off in style in the 86th minute.
Redcliffe PCYC in the end ran out deserved 4-0 winners and when the final whistle blew Captain Brendan Davis led the team to both sides of the
ground where they received a hero's ovation that began celebrations that continued long into the night.
"All players did their part on the day but although small in stature "Man Of The Match", Joshua Tung was a colossus in the midfield.
His brother "Peninsula Power Premier League" star Zac Tung would surely have been envious of the game played by his brother."
Victory was even sweeter due to the fact that through the year Redcliffe PCYC were unluckily docked 3 premiership points and a 6-2 win was changed to a
3-0 loss due to an innocent administration mistake on an obscure rule technicality.
Redcliffe PCYC definitely deserved their Premiership win as they have lost only 2 games all year, they were undefeated at home and they were the
only team in the competition to go through the entire 2nd round undefeated.
Redcliffe PCYC's season continues into the finals this week-end with their knock out Home Semi-Final scheduled for a 3PM Kick-Off at Talobilla P
ark on Saturday the 11th September.
Redcliffe PCYC Dolphins Soccer Club wishes to thank everyone for last weeks support hope that everyone again will be out in force this coming weekend.
